Romania launches nationwide campaign to stop dry‑vegetation burning

From 15 July to 15 October 2026, Romania’s General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), in partnership with Phoenix Media, is running a national information campaign titled “NU APRINDE PERICOLUL! ARDEREA VEGETAȚIEI USCATE ESTE INTERZISĂ!”. The initiative will broadcast preventive messages on electronic street panels at more than 170 sites across the country, as well as through media and public‑communication platforms.

The campaign urges citizens not to set fire to dry vegetation, to obey the law that bans such burning, to avoid discarding lit cigarettes or matches, to keep any fire source under supervision, and to call emergency number 112 if a fire starts. It highlights the rapid spread of dry‑vegetation fires during heat waves and strong winds, which threaten lives, homes, farms, forests and natural habitats. Penalties range from 7,500‑15,000 lei for individuals to 50,000‑100,000 lei for legal entities. Recent statistics show over 13,000 fires in 2023, more than 20,000 interventions in 2024, and around 17,000 vegetation fires in 2025, underscoring the need for heightened public responsibility.
