Romania maintains 25% diesel excise tax reduction through late October

The Romanian Ministry of Finance has announced that the 25% reduction in the excise tax for standard diesel will remain in effect for the second half of October 2026. This measure, implemented due to the crude oil market crisis, reduces the excise by 701.07 lei per 1,000 liters.

The 25% reduction is the maximum allowed under the current legal mechanism established by Law no. 162/2026. While the state cannot increase the reduction further to offset price hikes, the level may be adjusted downward to a minimum of 5% depending on international crude oil quotes and domestic pump prices. The Ministry will continue to re-evaluate the tax levels every two weeks.
