Romania motorway projects advance with major tunnel construction milestones

Major highway infrastructure projects in Romania are reaching critical milestones. On the A1 Sibiu-Pitești motorway, the Turkish construction company Mapa-Cengiz has begun work on the portals of the Boița 2 tunnel, which measures 444 meters. This marks the fourth tunnel to enter execution within the mountain section of the project. Following the recent breakthrough of the Boița 1 tunnel, authorities are working on environmental documentation revisions to allow for full construction permits across the entire section.

Simultaneously, progress is accelerating on the A1 Lugoj-Deva motorway. Specialists expect the breakthrough of the first gallery of the Great Tunnel (T2) around August 20, with the second gallery estimated for September. The Great Tunnel, located in the Holdea-Coșava area, is the largest motorway tunnel being constructed in Romania, featuring two galleries measuring 1,825 meters and 1,985 meters respectively. These works are part of a larger effort to complete the 13.5-kilometer segment between Margina and Holdea.
