Romania advances A1 Sibiu‑Pitești highway construction
Work on the A1 Sibiu‑Pitești motorway’s Section 3 (Cornetu‑Tigveni) is progressing, with the large ecoduct at Călineşti nearing the structural phase. Contractors WeBuild SPA‑Tancrad are reinforcing and concreting the deck, excavating foundations and installing piles. The 250‑metre long, 100‑metre wide ecoduct will cross DN1, a railway line and the Olt River, preserving the regional ecological corridor between the Căpăţânii, Cozia and Făgăraş mountains. The section, 37.4 km long, is funded by the Transport Programme at a contract value of 5.323 billion lei (≈ 142 million lei per kilometre), with about 25 % of the route worked on in April by over 1,000 workers and 200 machines.
Simultaneously, Section 2 (Boiţa‑Cornetu) is seeing active tunnelling on three mountain tunnels. At the Balota tunnel (≈ 500 m) the first 16 m have been excavated; the Robești tunnel (≈ 900 m) is 36 % complete, and the Boiţa‑1 tunnel (two galleries of 264 m and 247 m) has about 17 % of its length excavated. Overall physical progress on the Boiţa‑Cornetu segment stands at 11.63 %. This lot’s contract is valued at roughly 4.25 billion lei, also financed through the Transport Programme. Completion of further works depends on the issuance of a revised environmental agreement by the Ministry of Environment.
