Romania moves to resume ovine and lamb carcass exports

Romanian authorities said the National Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) is close to lifting the ban on ovine and lamb carcass exports. After technical talks in Brussels with the European Commission’s Directorate‑General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) and a presentation at the EU Council meeting in Luxembourg, the EU signaled willingness to support a solution. ANSVSA and the Romanian agriculture ministry have proposed an expert group of international and Romanian specialists to assess the measures taken against ovine pox and small‑ruminant pest, followed by an on‑site EU audit. The group’s findings and final recommendations are expected by early July, which could reopen markets in Africa, the Middle East and other EU destinations, offering critical relief to Romanian sheep farmers.
