Romanian analyst warns of repeat drone incidents, urges security strategy for Black Sea region

Security analyst Ștefan Popescu cautioned that drone incidents at Romania’s border are likely to recur and that the country needs a comprehensive security strategy rather than relying solely on diplomatic protests. He highlighted recent drone activity near Odesa, noting it adds pressure on Romania and reveals structural vulnerabilities in the Black Sea and lower Danube areas. Popescu also mentioned AI‑generated messages transmitted from Ukrainian and Polish phone numbers, describing the situation as part of a hybrid‑war environment that requires a coherent political dialogue.

In a separate interview, Popescu explained that Russia is attempting to decouple Ukraine from the Black Sea, with the port of Odesa identified as a strategic prize. He said, “It is clear that Odesa remains important for them,” adding that limiting Ukraine’s access would hinder its transport routes and reduce its strategic value. He noted that Ukrainian Danube ports are less exposed to attacks, while Romania’s proximity facilitates logistical corridors that traverse the Euro‑Atlantic space.
