Spain deploys F‑18 fighters to Romania as NATO bolsters eastern flank
Spain will send seven F‑18 Hornet fighter aircraft, an A400M aerial‑refuelling tanker, three NH‑90 counter‑drone helicopters and roughly 200 Air and Space Force personnel to Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania. The deployment is part of NATO’s shift from the traditional Air Policing mission to an expanded Air Defence framework on the alliance’s eastern flank, aimed at countering a broader spectrum of aerial threats, including unmanned systems, cruise and ballistic missiles. Italy and Turkey will also rotate assets – four Eurofighter Typhoons and over 100 staff to Lithuania, and five F‑16s with about 80 personnel to Estonia – replacing the Romanian contingent that had been operating in the Baltic states.
The move comes after a series of Russian drone incursions over Romanian airspace in late July 2026, during which Romanian F‑16s shot down three drones on 24, 25 and 26 July. Romanian officials, including DSU chief Raed Arafat, urged the public to be prepared for potential crises and discussed the possibility of activating NATO’s Article 4 for emergency consultations. Security analyst Ştefan Popescu warned that Romania needs a comprehensive security strategy to address recurring border drone incidents.
