Romania opens Paleu‑Biharia road; A3 motorway extensions bring Zalău closer to Oradea

On 27 June 2026 a new 3.1‑km link between the village of Paleu and the Biharia bypass (DJ767K) opened to traffic. The two‑lane road, which includes a 6‑metre‑wide carriageway and a parallel bike path, provides direct access for local residents to the Biharia beltway and consequently to the A3 Transylvania motorway. The project, financed by the EU Regional Programme North‑West 2021‑2027, cost roughly 10.27 million lei and was built by Dumexim and Consorzio Stabile EBG Group after an independent technical audit required the contractor to repave a 350‑metre section.

Meanwhile, the A3 motorway (Autostrada Transilvania) is being extended toward the city of Zalău. By 2026–2027, new motorway sections will shorten the distance between Zalău and both Cluj‑Napoca (≈42 km of new road) and Oradea (≈70 km of new road). The works include the 2.89‑km Meseș Tunnel and a series of bridges and viaducts, part of a €6.62 billion project that will eventually allow uninterrupted travel from the western border to Târgu Mureș. The extensions are expected to improve regional connectivity and stimulate local economies.
