Romania signs multi‑billion‑euro contracts for SHORAD‑VSHORAD air‑defence systems

Romanian interim Defence Minister Radu Miruță announced the signing of a framework contract for the acquisition of short‑ and very‑short‑range air‑defence (SHORAD‑VSHORAD) systems worth 10.33 billion lei (≈ 2.04 billion €). The programme will deliver six integrated air‑defence sets, accompanying training, simulation and logistics packages, and includes both SHORAD and VSHORAD launchers, ammunition and support services.

The procurement involves multiple suppliers. Israeli Rafael Advanced Defense Systems will provide SPYDER short‑range batteries under a contract valued at 3.049 billion lei, while German defence group Rheinmetall has been awarded contracts totalling nearly 5 billion € for Skyranger 35 mobile air‑defence systems mounted on KF41 Lynx chassis, 35 mm ammunition and related equipment. Together, the deals form a major modernisation push for the Romanian Army and strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.

All contracts were signed in June 2026 and are part of a broader effort to protect Romanian territory against drones, rockets and low‑altitude aircraft, providing a final‑layer “shield” around critical assets.
