Romania political tension rises amid calls for early elections and violent threats

Romania is facing heightened political instability as interim Vice Premier Oana Gheorghiu has called for early elections. Gheorghiu accused the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of deliberately blocking reforms and prolonging administrative instability to protect party interests rather than the national interest.

Gheorghiu stated that if the current Parliament cannot generate a stable majority for governance, a new Parliament is necessary. This follows a period of crisis initiated when the PSD and AUR dismissed the previous government without providing an immediate successor.

In a separate development regarding political tensions, a violent threat was recorded in a TikTok video targeting Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan, Ilie Bolojan, and various journalists. The individual, identifying as a supporter of Călin Georgescu, used explicit language threatening physical violence against those critical of Georgescu, raising concerns about the radicalization of political discourse in the digital space.
