Romania prepares for August 12 partial solar eclipse

A partial solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, with the greatest coverage of about 33 % expected in western Romania. The eclipse will happen just before sunset, and observers are warned to use proper solar‑filter glasses to avoid permanent eye damage.

The Astronomical Observatory “Amiral Vasile Urseanu” identified the optimal viewing spots in Romania and noted that the next total solar eclipse visible from the country will not happen until 3 September 2081. A later partial eclipse over Bucharest is forecast for 2 August 2027, when roughly 51 % of the Sun will be obscured.

In the United Kingdom, the same event will be visible as a deep partial eclipse, with 90‑95 % coverage in some areas, according to Jake Foster of the Royal Observatory Greenwich. The Romanian public is encouraged to follow safety guidelines while observing the brief two‑minute‑and‑half totality phase that will darken the sky at daylight.
