Romania: President preparing new Prime Minister appointment

Presidential advisor Eugen Tomac has stated that President Nicușor Dan is working toward a new appointment for the position of Prime Minister. This would be the third attempt following previous failures, and Tomac expressed confidence that the upcoming nominee will successfully secure the necessary votes in Parliament.

Tomac emphasized that the President is in constant dialogue with political leaders to find a convincing formula to overcome the current political impasse. He noted that Romania has been operating under an interim government without full powers for over three months, marking the longest such period in the country's post-communist history. This prolonged transition is occurring amidst pressures regarding the national budget, the PNRR, and energy concerns.

Regarding the possibility of early elections, Tomac cautioned against frequent voting cycles. He argued that if elections were held again in 2026 following the recent cycles, it would be a “mockery of Romanian citizens” and could potentially prolong the existing political crisis rather than resolve it.
