Romania proposes extending fuel excise tax reduction until January 2027

The Romanian Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy have drafted a proposal to extend the crisis situation in the crude oil and petroleum products market from November 1, 2026, until January 31, 2027. This measure aims to maintain protections against rising fuel prices, specifically through the temporary reduction of the excise tax on standard diesel and the limitation of commercial markups by oil companies.

According to technical analyses from the Ministry of Finance, ending these measures would result in an estimated price increase of approximately 0.85 lei per liter for diesel. Under current market conditions, the average price could rise from 10.90 lei/liter to roughly 11.75 lei/liter, adding about 42 lei to the cost of a 50-liter tank.

The proposed decision also maintains existing monitoring regimes for exports and intra-community deliveries. These strategic interventions are intended to mitigate inflationary pressures, protect consumer purchasing power during the cold season, and support sectors such as transport, agriculture, and logistics.
