Romania proposes healthcare reforms for oncology patients
The National Health Insurance House (CNAS) has proposed modifications to the framework contract to prioritize cancer prevention and early diagnosis. If adopted, the measures could allow oncology patients faster access to diagnostic services without a referral and provide low-dose CT scans for those at risk of lung cancer.
Proposed expansions include enhanced support such as psycho-oncology, rehabilitation, home care, and unassisted sanitary transport. By January 2027, CNAS aims to expand genetic testing from 8 to 14 types of cancer and introduce nutritional and therapeutic education services.
In a related legislative development, the Romanian Senate's specialized commission has given a favorable report to a bill that would extend paid medical leave and indemnities to caregivers of adult oncology patients during medical investigations. Currently, such leave is primarily reserved for surgeries and treatments; the new proposal recognizes the physical and emotional necessity of support during the diagnostic and monitoring phases.
