Romania proposes new emergency lane rules for drivers

A new legislative proposal has been submitted to the Romanian Senate to clarify rules for creating emergency lanes. Introduced by USR representatives Dumitru Văduva and Ovidiu Paraschivescu, the bill aims to ensure the unimpeded passage of ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles using light and sound signals.

Under the proposed rules, drivers on single-lane, one-way roads would need to move to opposite sides of the roadway. On multi-lane roads, those in the left lane would move toward the center axis, while those in other lanes would move toward the right edge. Violations could result in fines of up to 1,000 lei and a 30-day driver's license suspension.

The initiative seeks to align Romanian law with European practices, as current regulations are considered unclear. The proposal also explores methods for informing drivers of accidents and congestion in real-time to facilitate the formation of emergency lanes. The bill has received support from various political parties and members of the House Transport Committee.
