Romania ranks 7th cheapest broadband worldwide while slipping to 61st in global competitiveness
A Broadband Genie analysis of offers collected between 27 January and 10 February 2026 found that Romania's average fixed‑line broadband price is $8.19 per month, placing it seventh cheapest worldwide after Iran, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Mongolia. The study notes that many of the lowest‑cost markets, including Romania, also rank among the fastest broadband speeds globally, while the most expensive markets are isolated territories such as Wallis and Futuna and Turkmenistan.
The 2026 World Competitiveness Yearbook, published by the IMD, shows Romania falling 12 places to 61st out of 70 economies. Regional neighbours Poland (41st), Hungary (51st) and Bulgaria (56th) rank ahead, while Mexico (62nd) and Slovakia (63rd) trail. The report highlights the need for Romania to improve public‑spending efficiency, boost research and development, accelerate digital transformation, and strengthen health, education and defence systems to enhance its competitive standing.
