NATO Summit in Ankara Commits $70 bn to Ukraine and Launches Major Defence Procurement Programme

The NATO summit held in Ankara brought together the heads of state of all 32 alliance members. Leaders reaffirmed the Article 5 mutual‑defence guarantee and pledged a total of €70 billion in assistance to Ukraine through 2026. The declaration also announced more than $50 billion in new defence procurements, including joint acquisition of Saab GlobalEye aircraft, Northrop Grumman MQ‑4C Triton drones, and a multinational 155 mm artillery‑munitions project.

A new “Front Door for Industry” platform and the first public, unclassified demand signal were introduced to simplify engagement for small‑ and medium‑sized enterprises. The NATO Support and Procurement Agency awarded contracts worth hundreds of millions for drones, missiles and other systems, while a twelve‑nation initiative will safeguard critical raw‑material supplies.

U.S. President Donald Trump used the meeting to criticize several allies over defence spending, imposed a trade embargo on Spain and threatened further actions regarding Greenland, but nevertheless described the summit as “tremendously successful”. Despite these tensions, the alliance’s senior officials said the summit demonstrated “ironclad” unity, especially in support of Ukraine.

Turkey’s hosting was highlighted as showcasing its defence industry capabilities, with live demonstrations at Turkish Aerospace Industries and agreements worth close to $100 billion signed throughout the two‑day event.
