EU approves €14.3 million flood aid for Romania

The European Parliament voted 642‑13‑1 to release €144.1 million from the EU Solidarity Fund for Spain, Romania and Cyprus after the 2025 wave of wildfires, floods and heatwaves. Spain receives €120.55 million, Cyprus €9.21 million and Romania €14.34 million to cover damage from severe flooding in May‑June 2025, including the disruption of critical infrastructure at the Praid Salt Mine.

An amendment pushed by European Parliament Vice‑President Victor Negrescu secured additional measures for the rapid reconstruction of the Praid salt mine and the surrounding communities. The funds will finance emergency response, restoration of essential services, clean‑up operations, temporary accommodation and broader resilience investments.

The aid package follows advance payments already made to Spain (€30 million) and Cyprus (€2.3 million) and reflects the EU’s post‑disaster solidarity mechanism established in 2002, which has supported more than €10 billion for 147 events across member states and accession countries.
