Romania regional economic gaps drive unequal medical benefit adoption

Regional economic disparities in Romania are driving unequal access to corporate medical benefits. Companies in the West and Central regions, such as Cluj, Timiș, Brașov, Sibiu, and Oradea, are adopting medical subscriptions much more frequently than those in the South and Moldova regions.

According to Ioana Moldovan, Corporate Sales Manager and Director at MedLife, this trend is linked to three primary factors: the profile of employers, local labor market pressure, and employee health education levels. The West and Central regions benefit from a high concentration of multinational corporations, IT, and outsourcing firms, which utilize extra-salary benefits to attract and retain skilled workers. These regions also boast higher GDP per capita and lower unemployment rates.

In contrast, the South and Moldova regions remain largely focused on agriculture, light industry, and local SMEs, where extra-salary benefits are less common. Additionally, employees in more developed urban areas tend to have higher levels of health education and a greater understanding of preventative care, driving demand for these services.
