Romania Reopens Modernized 'Transfăgărășanul Vrancei' Mountain Road

On 8 July 2026, the 16‑kilometre DN 2L segment between Soveja and Lepșa in Vrancea County was officially opened after a major modernization project. The road, dubbed “Transfăgărășanul Vrancei”, now features two traffic lanes, new safety barriers, upgraded drainage, eight coastal viaducts and two new bridges, along with extensive slope‑stabilisation works to reduce landslide risk.

The upgrade, costing 226.391 million lei and fully funded by the Romanian state, was carried out by the consortium LEMACONS SRL, CITADINA 98 SA and TRAMECO SA. Authorities say the new route will provide a faster, direct link among the historic regions of Muntenia, Moldova and Transylvania, and is expected to boost tourism in the area by improving access to the scenic mountain landscape.

The reopening ceremony was attended by representatives of the regional road authorities (DRDP Iaşi and DRDP Buzău), local officials and the construction firms involved.
