Romania reports 58 West Nile virus cases, including three deaths

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) has reported 58 cases of West Nile virus in Romania between June 3 and September 2. Of these, 47 cases were laboratory-confirmed and 11 were classified as probable.

Three deaths have been linked to the virus, involving elderly individuals with existing comorbidities. The infection has primarily affected older age groups, with 15 cases in people aged 60–69, 12 cases in those aged 50–59, and 10 cases in those aged 70–79. One case was also reported in an adolescent aged 15–19.

Bucharest has recorded the highest number of infections, with 25 cases, accounting for nearly half of the total reported in the country.
