Romania advances multi‑billion‑lei power grid, generation and wind projects

Romania has launched a series of large‑scale energy infrastructure initiatives. A 387 million‑lei tender by Reţele Electrice targets high‑voltage line upgrades, new substations and network reinforcement across Bucharest and ten counties, with offers due 17 August 2026 and a 60‑month contract period.

The Rovinari coal‑depot is set to receive a rented excavator (estimated 279,048 lei) to maintain fuel supplies for its three operating units, supporting continued electricity generation.

Colterm announced preparations for the 2026‑27 winter season, planning to secure 145,000‑165,000 tonnes of coal and 415,000‑435,000 MWh of natural gas. The company’s administrator Cristian Amza said, “SACET is one of the most important energy infrastructures in the city… a modernised centralized system remains one of the safest and most sustainable options for the future.”

ELCEN completed the first stage of a competitive‑dialogue process for a new 275 MW electrical and 214 MW thermal cogeneration unit at CET South in Bucharest. The project, financed by the Modernisation Fund and other sources at an estimated 3.6 billion lei, will run on natural gas and be “hydrogen ready.”

Electrogrup, part of the E‑INFRA group, was appointed general contractor for the 392 MW Peștera II on‑shore wind farm in Constanța County. Developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, the project will add significant wind capacity to the Dobrogea region.
