Romania says Russian Geran‑2 drone struck house near Ukraine border
Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed that a drone that hit a residential house in Galați on the night of May 31 was a Russian‑made Geran‑2, the first such strike on civilian property outside Ukraine since the war began in 2022. Technical experts identified the drone’s fragments, fuel type and navigation system as matching the Geran‑2 series, and a Cyrillic inscription on the wreckage also indicated the model.
The impact caused a fire and injured a 14‑year‑old boy and a 53‑year‑old woman. Romania blamed Moscow, summoned the Russian ambassador and said it would consider further measures, emphasizing its NATO commitment and refusing to let the conflict spill onto its territory. Russia’s embassy in Bucharest claimed the incident was staged by Ukraine, while President Vladimir Putin said the drone’s origin was still unclear. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Romania for its “clarity”.
