Romania schedules major rail and highway upgrades for 2027
Romania’s transport network is set for extensive upgrades slated for 2027. The Drobeta Turnu Severin–Caransebeș railway will be fully closed from February 2027 to February 2032 for a multi‑billion‑lei modernization that includes electrification, ERTMS signalling, tunnel reconstruction and station upgrades. The project is part of the TEN‑T Rhine‑Danube corridor and involves three contracts worth a combined €2.5 billion.
The first 24 km of the A8 "Autostrada Unirii" between Târgu Mureș and Miercurea Nirajului is expected to be open in early 2027. Works are about 50 % complete, with roughly 800 workers and over 700 machines on site, and large earth‑moving and asphalt‑laying operations scheduled for July and August.
The Bucharest Beltway (A0) Lot 1, a 17.5‑km segment linking DN1 and A1, will be inaugurated in spring 2027, delayed from an earlier 2023 target. Construction began in March 2025 after a contract was signed in September 2023, and officials say no major technical obstacles remain.
