Romania school regulations on unexcused absences for vacations

In Romania, taking children on vacation during the school year results in unexcused absences, as holidays are not recognized by law as valid justifications for missing classes. While absences for illness, hospitalizations, or school-sanctioned competitions can be justified with proper documentation, travel for leisure cannot be retroactively excused.

Unexcused absences can lead to academic and legal consequences. For every 10 unexcused absences in a module, or if unexcused absences reach 10% of the total hours for a subject, the student's conduct grade (nota la purtare) may be reduced by one point. If the conduct grade falls below a 6.0 average, it may jeopardize the student's ability to pass the school year.

Furthermore, parents have a legal obligation to ensure their children participate in compulsory education. Failure to comply with this obligation can result in sanctions, including fines ranging from 100 to 1,000 lei or community service.
