Yara J tanker catches fire in Romanian waters amid drone attack investigation

A fire broke out on the Comoros-flagged chemical and oil tanker Yara J while it was anchored in Romanian territorial waters near Sulina. The vessel was reportedly sailing with an empty cargo at the time of the incident.

Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta stated that an investigation is underway to determine if the fire was caused by a drone strike. While Romanian military radar systems did not detect a drone targeting the Yara J specifically, authorities reported that multiple aerial targets breached Romanian airspace near the Ukrainian border around the time of the incident. One target was reportedly intercepted by Ukrainian air defense.

A NATO source claimed that the drones responsible for recent fires on tankers in the region were of Russian origin. The incident has heightened security concerns regarding hybrid attacks and the safety of commercial shipping lanes in the Black Sea. The crew of the Yara J was reported safe, and the flames were extinguished.
