Romania Secures Accelerated NATO Drone Defence Measures

After two drone incidents over Constanța and Galați, NATO convened a Council meeting in Brussels to address Romania’s security concerns in the Black Sea region. President Nicușor Dan and Ambassador Dan Neculăescu reported that allies reaffirmed full solidarity with Romania and agreed to accelerate NATO projects aimed at countering aerial and maritime drone threats.

The alliance plans to boost air‑defence capabilities on Romanian soil, including expanded low‑altitude radar networks, additional NATO patrol aircraft, anti‑drone systems and early‑warning sensors. A dedicated NATO session on the Black Sea is scheduled for 10 June, and further measures are expected to be approved at the NATO summit in Ankara on 7‑8 July. Romania also highlighted the importance of protecting critical energy infrastructure such as the Neptun Deep project.

These steps aim to strengthen deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank and improve the security of the Black Sea maritime domain.
