Romania secures EU approval to resume sheep and goat exports

The European Commission has approved an action plan developed by Romania’s National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) to unblock sheep and goat exports. The plan utilizes a differentiated vaccination scheme to protect the trade of carcasses and dairy products while managing disease risks.

Initial vaccination efforts will focus on the Dobrogea region, specifically the counties of Tulcea and Constanța, which serve as primary transit corridors for animals. The European Commission is providing 1.3 million vaccine doses free of charge to support this campaign. Once regional vaccination is underway, Romania will be able to resume the export of live animals to third countries.

ANSVSA has already secured six export markets through international treaties, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Israel, and Libya, with seven additional agreements currently under advanced negotiation. Additionally, the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture announced that breeders with over 150 heads can receive up to 50,000 euros for decontamination equipment and quarantine systems to support these sanitary measures.
