Romania seeks NATO and EU backing after Constanța port drone explosion

A maritime drone crashed and exploded in the Port of Constanța, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to stress that Romania’s security is of "extreme importance" for France and the EU, calling the incident a direct consequence of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced that Romania will augment NATO monitoring along the Black Sea coast, seek additional NATO equipment this summer, and host a NATO Black Sea security centre in Constanța from 2028. He also said negotiations are underway with Bulgaria to create a European security centre for the region and confirmed ongoing dialogue with Ukraine. No casualties were reported, and the authorities credited swift action for preventing loss of life.
