Romania's Bolojan government boosts EU fund absorption eightfold, says Mureșan
Europarliamentarian Siegfried Mureșan (PNL) claims the interim Bolojan government has taken Romania, for the first time, among the EU’s top performers in absorbing cohesion funds. He reports that in the first six months of 2026 the government secured €2.3 billion, an average of €383 million per month, compared with about €600 million (≈€50 million per month) absorbed under the Ciolacu government in 2024 – an increase of almost eight times.
Mureșan notes that Romania’s overall effective absorption rate has risen to 24.6%, well above the EU average of 17.8%, after being only 2% at the end of 2024 (EU average 2.7%). He criticises the previous administration’s “consumption‑driven” model, saying it raised imports and ignored domestic entrepreneurs. Former premier Marcel Ciolacu has accused Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and Minister Dragoș Pîslaru of a “premeditated crime” that delayed seven key projects needed for PNRR funding, potentially costing Romania billions of euros.
