Romania sees hybrid cars dominate new registrations in early 2026
Data from the Romanian Driver's Licences and Vehicle Registration Authority show that 64,850 new cars were registered in the first half of 2026. Hybrid models led the segment with 37,563 registrations, representing roughly 58 % of all new‑car sales.
During the same period, 171,276 used cars were registered. Diesel vehicles still dominate the second‑hand market with 104,472 units (about 61 %), while hybrids account for only 19,373 registrations (around 11 %). The shift toward hybrids is reflected in the rapid monthly growth of new‑car registrations, which rose from 7,927 in January to 16,120 in June, and in the steady increase of hybrid registrations each month.
The trend coincides with the launch of the "Rabla 2026" incentive programme, offering eco‑vouchers for the purchase of hybrid and electric vehicles, aimed at accelerating the transition to lower‑emission cars.
