Sibiu leads Romania's salary growth in April 2026
In April 2026 the county of Sibiu was the only region in Romania where the net average salary increased by more than 10% compared with the same month a year earlier, a pace almost three times the national average of 3.5%. This growth outstripped the increases recorded in Bucharest and Cluj, which saw rises of 3.9% and 2% respectively.
Nationally, the average gross salary reached 9,740 lei and the average net salary rose to 5,843 lei, up 3.5% year‑on‑year. After Sibiu, the counties with the strongest gains were Galaţi (+7.6%), Timiş (+6.7%), Mehedinţi (+6.5%) and Ilfov (+6.3%). Bucharest remains the highest‑paid area with a net average of about 7,631 lei, while Timiş ranks third in salary levels.
Sectoral differences are pronounced: oil and gas extraction yields the highest net salaries (over 15,400 lei), followed by the IT industry (around 14,200 lei) and private pension‑fund and oil‑processing jobs (above 13,000 lei). Low‑paid sectors include aquaculture, social‑assistance services and hospitality. The minimum gross wage was raised by 275 lei, translating to an approximate net increase of 125 lei for more than 1.7 million employees.
