Romania sees sharp rise in industrial production prices as logistics hub expands
Eurostat data show that Romania climbed to second place in the EU for the fastest increase in industrial production prices in May 2026, with a 13.5% year‑on‑year rise, trailing only Bulgaria. Overall industrial production prices rose 5.9% in the euro area and 5.7% across the EU, driven largely by a 23.75% jump in the energy sector and double‑digit growth in intermediate and capital goods.
At the same time, Romania is attracting increasing foreign investment as a logistics and nearshoring destination. In 2025 the country secured over 100 direct foreign investment projects, creating jobs that grew by 39% and lifting Romania to 11th place in the EU business‑attractiveness ranking, second in Central‑Eastern Europe. The Black Sea port of Constanta handled about 67 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, positioning it as a strategic hub for Central‑Eastern European supply chains and a key link to Asian markets.
These trends underline Romania’s dual challenge: rising production costs that could affect competitiveness, and a growing role as a regional logistics centre that promises new economic opportunities.
