Romania sees uncertain new government formation as euro adoption urged
Former President Traian Băsescu warned that the parliamentary vote on the new cabinet led by designated Prime Minister Adrian Veștea remains unpredictable, stating, “Sunt foarte reținut în a crede că Guvernul Veștea poate să treacă mâine prin Parlament.” He described the political situation as “extremely complicated,” noting weeks of unproductive negotiations since the collapse of the previous government.
In a separate commentary, Leonardo Badea, first deputy governor of the National Bank of Romania, called on the government to accelerate preparations for joining the euro area. He said, “România ar trebui să își intensifice eforturile politice și ajustările macroeconomice, pentru a pregăti trecerea la euro într-un orizont de timp realist,” arguing that euro adoption would strengthen economic stability and reduce fiscal vulnerabilities.
