Romania Sets Deadline for Free Electronic ID Cards, Fees Apply After June 2026

Romanian authorities are urging citizens aged 14 and older to apply for the new electronic identity card (CEI) before the free‑issuance deadline. The first card can be obtained at no cost until 30 June 2026, after which a fee of 70 lei will be charged. Applications must be booked online through the national portal hub.mai.gov.ro, with an in‑person visit required for biometric capture and card issuance.

The electronic IDs, introduced in response to an EU mandate from 2019, feature advanced security elements, act as a travel document within the EU/EEA, and enable secure online authentication and electronic signatures. Local authorities, such as Ghiroda municipality, are warning residents to schedule appointments early to avoid crowds, especially for documents expiring by 31 August 2026 (free) or 31 December 2026 (to reduce congestion).
