Romania shoots down three Russian drones in three days, summons ambassador FAST-MOVING

Romania’s air force intercepted and destroyed three unmanned aerial vehicles in three consecutive days – Friday, Saturday and Sunday – using F‑16 fighter jets. The drones, identified as Shahed‑type UAVs employed by Russia in its war against Ukraine, were downed over the Black Sea near Sulina and near the town of Sfântu Gheorghe in Tulcea County. President Nicușor Dan described the incursions as “unacceptable and intolerable” and summoned the Russian ambassador to Bucharest. Defence Minister Radu Miruta reiterated that Romania’s airspace is also NATO and EU airspace, while Foreign Minister Oana Toiu lodged a diplomatic protest. NATO officials noted the actions signal a growing willingness among eastern‑flank allies to intercept such violations. Since the start of the Ukraine conflict, Russian drones have entered Romanian airspace more than 30 times, with 33 recorded incidents, prompting heightened alert procedures and cross‑border security measures.
