Romania shoots down two suspected Russian Geran drones

Romanian F-16 fighter jets intercepted and destroyed two suspected Russian Geran-family attack drones over the Black Sea on Saturday, October 17. The drones, which officials believe were advanced Geran-4 models equipped with jet or turboprop engines, were traveling at speeds of approximately 450 kilometers per hour.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense reported that the aircraft scrambled from the Borcea Air Base after radar detected the targets approximately 120 kilometers east of Snake Island. The first drone was neutralized southeast of Sulina after two minutes in Romanian territorial waters, and the second was destroyed east of Sulina after five minutes. The military utilized AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles to complete the interception.

This incident follows a series of maritime security concerns in the Black Sea, including recent drone strikes on chemical tankers near the Sulina Canal and attacks on commercial vessels. Romanian authorities have reported that these incursions occur amid ongoing Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure.
