Romania signs major defence contracts under SAFE programme
Romania will allocate €16.68 billion from its SAFE (Strategic Development Fund) to a mix of dual‑use infrastructure and defence equipment. €4.2 billion is earmarked for highway projects A7 and A8, while €12.48 billion funds a series of military contracts.
Key acquisitions include 298 tracked infantry fighting vehicles produced locally by Rheinmetall Automecanica, four naval patrol and diver‑intervention vessels built at Romanian shipyards, 11 anti‑aircraft systems (SKYNEX, SKYRANGER and Millenium) with associated 35 mm AHEAD ammunition, 34 drone systems and 15 Scorpion kits from Quantum Systems, 231 MANPAD Mistral launchers with 934 rockets, six H175M helicopters financed through SAFE, additional multi‑role helicopters (H160, H145) and a tactical multipurpose aircraft Spartan. Production and maintenance for many of these systems will be carried out in Romania, supporting domestic industrial capacity. The contracts also cover flight simulators and mobile cyber‑operations centres.
