Romania energy sector faces rising costs and solar technology dependency
Romania is experiencing significant shifts in its energy landscape, characterized by growing solar energy investments and rising utility costs. Prosumers can access up to 15,000 lei in funding for energy storage systems through a 400 million lei program managed by the Environmental Fund Administration (AFM).
Industry experts, including Lucian Peticilă of Visual Fan, note that the EPC market is maturing, with a strategic shift toward integrating production with energy storage (BESS) and grid infrastructure. However, this transition faces challenges. Analysts warn of a potential 'polycrisis' by late 2026, where rising energy prices, fiscal instability, and supply vulnerabilities could reinforce one another.
Furthermore, Europe faces a growing dependency on Chinese technology, as China controls over 70% of the global solar panel market. This dominance raises concerns regarding long-term sustainability and national security for European energy grids. Meanwhile, Romanian consumers are already seeing immediate impacts, with electricity and gas bills rising due to increased consumption and higher market prices.
