Romania starts PPR vaccination rollout in Constanta and Tulcea

Romania's National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) announced the drafting of a detailed action plan to vaccinate sheep and goats against peste des petits ruminants (PPR). The plan follows an approval‑in‑principle from the European Commission and will be sent to the EU Emergency Veterinary Team (EuVet) for review before a team of European specialists visits Romania to finalise the strategy.

The initial phase will target Constanta and Tulcea counties, chosen for their role as a transit corridor for livestock from Ukraine to the Port of Constanta, a prior PPR case recorded there in July 2024, the natural barrier of the Danube and a high concentration of animal‑collection centres. The first 300,000 vaccine doses will be provided free of charge, with a further 900,000 doses to be secured by the EU, bringing the total to 1.2 million doses. ANSVSA also secured a principle agreement with Arab states to renegotiate export veterinary certificates, aiming to resume live‑animal trade once EU restrictions are lifted.
