Romania tightens traffic enforcement as drivers face fraud penalties and new documentation law

Romanian authorities have intensified enforcement of speed limits using the e‑SIGUR system, which employs high‑resolution cameras to capture drivers' faces from up to 150 m and record speeds from over a kilometre away. Since the start of 2026 the system logged 51,000 speed violations, and police have prosecuted 32 drivers who falsely claimed their spouses were behind the wheel. False statements can carry a prison term of two months to three years.

In parallel, the Romanian Senate approved a bill that eliminates fines for motorists who lack a physical driving licence or identity document, provided police can verify the information electronically through official databases. The measure passed 52‑34 amid debate over digital verification, with some senators warning against over‑reliance on technology. The law now moves to the Chamber of Deputies for final approval.
