Romania to conduct nationwide road traffic survey
The National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) will conduct a nationwide traffic survey across Romania’s highways, expressways, and national roads in the coming weeks. During this operation, police may stop drivers—even those who have not committed any violations—to collect statistical data.
Drivers will be asked about their point of origin, their destination, the purpose of their trip (such as work, tourism, or returning home), and, in the case of trucks, the type of goods being transported. For passenger vehicles, the number of occupants may also be recorded. The data will be used to map traffic patterns, update national transportation models, conduct feasibility studies, and analyze freight demand.
The surveys will take place at statistically selected locations during specific time windows: 8:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. The scheduled dates for 2026 are September 30, October 7, October 21, October 28, and November 4. CNAIR emphasized that the process is entirely anonymous and compliant with GDPR; no license plate numbers or personal identities will be recorded.
