Romania to Double Vertical Gas Corridor Capacity with €1.65 bn Investment

Romania's Transgaz announced a €1.65 billion plan to double the capacity of the so‑called Vertical Gas Corridor, raising annual transport potential from about 5 billion to 9.4 billion cubic metres. The upgrade will enable the corridor to carry additional U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other supplies from terminals in Greece, Cyprus and the Caspian region, routing gas northward through Bulgaria to markets in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Moldova and Ukraine. Transgaz chief Ion Sterian said the project will strengthen Romania’s role as a regional gas hub, generate extra transit revenue and reduce dependence on Russian gas. The investment also aligns with broader regional efforts to diversify energy sources and improve supply security.
