Regional drone incidents prompt airspace alerts in Moldova and Romania

Security concerns have escalated in the Black Sea region following drone-related incidents in Romania and Moldova. In Moldova, military surveillance detected an unidentified aerial object entering the airspace near the Cuciurgan–Tiraspol direction. The object disappeared from radar near Talmaza, shortly before an explosion and vegetation fire were reported approximately three kilometers from the locality. Authorities temporarily closed central airspace for 15 minutes to manage the situation.

In Romania, drone debris has been discovered on coastal beaches, leading to temporary closures of certain areas, such as Costinești, to prevent potential injuries from explosive remnants. Romanian Interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță reported that over 100 drones were detected by Romanian radar near Ukrainian ports in the last seven days, noting that many fragments were washed ashore by waves after being destroyed by the Ukrainian military.

To counter evolving threats, the Romanian Army is actively modifying the software of its existing anti-drone systems. Minister Miruță stated that the military is working to enable communication between different pieces of equipment from various manufacturers to create a more integrated detection and interception architecture. This effort aims to improve reaction times and protect both Romanian and NATO airspace against low-cost drone incursions.
