Romania to re‑evaluate Doicesti SMR nuclear plant amid feasibility concerns

The board of Nuclearelectrica has put the Doicesti small modular reactor (SMR) project under review, proposing to update the implementation strategy for the 462 MW plant. Interim Energy Minister Ilie Bolojan has harshly criticised the project's feasibility, warning that Romania could end up with only a site and paperwork after spending roughly $240 million.

Preliminary analyses indicate that the electricity price from the SMR would exceed market levels, casting doubt on the investment’s profitability. The project, a joint venture between state‑owned Nuclearelectrica and private Nova Power&Gas, was originally slated for operation in 2029 but has been pushed back: the final investment decision is now set for February 2026, the first 77 MW module is expected to begin commercial operation in July 2033, and the full 462 MW plant in December 2034. Funding challenges persist, with the South‑Korean DSPE Beta fund rejected and only non‑binding support letters from U.S. agencies.

Bolojan argues that Romania should concentrate resources on upgrading the existing Cernavodă reactors, which use proven technology. The upcoming shareholders' meeting will decide the next steps for the Doicesti SMR project.
