Romania to Start EU‑Funded Flood Protection Works at Parajd Salt Mine

Romanian environment minister Diana Buzoianu announced that flood‑protection works at the Parajd salt mine can begin this year after the European Union approved €14.3 million from its Solidarity Fund for flood‑damage relief. The project will divert the Korond River away from the mine, construct a 12‑meter high dam, a spillway reservoir and an underground drainage channel, and provide long‑term water security for nearby villages that now rely on desalination plants.

The total investment, approved by the Bucharest government in February, totals 332 million lei (about €24.7 million) and is slated for completion over three years. The works are part of a wider effort to restore infrastructure damaged by the May 2024 flooding that inundated the state‑owned mine, a major tourist attraction and employer for the region.
