Romania updates pension rules for military service and retirement age

Under Romania's Law no. 360/2023 regarding the public pension system, which came into full effect on September 1, 2024, military service is recognized as an assimilated period for pension calculations. While military service contributes to the total number of points, it is not treated as a contributory period, meaning it does not generate stability points, which are reserved for contributory periods exceeding 25 years. For periods falling under current regulations, the law establishes a score of 0.25 points for each month of assimilated service.

The law also outlines a gradual increase in the standard retirement age for women born between 1964 and 1970. The retirement age for women will rise from 62 years and 7 months in September 2026 to 65 years by January 2035. Additionally, the required full contribution period will reach 35 years for all generations by 2030, while the minimum contribution period remains at 15 years.
