Romania urges balanced NATO resources and drone auto‑detonation system at Ankara summit

Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruță told the NATO summit in Turkey that Romania will propose a system to automatically detonate drones that enter Romanian airspace. He argued that the war in Ukraine creates security risks for Romania and called for a more equitable distribution of NATO resources on the alliance’s eastern flank. Miruță highlighted Romania’s defence budget rise to 2.24% of GDP last year, a target of 3%, new contracts for four warships and the revitalisation of national defence‑industry plants.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at the same summit, urged NATO to admit Ukraine, saying “Ucraina ar putea aduce capacităţi de apărare extraordinare Alianţei Nord‑Atlantice dacă va deveni membru al NATO” and pressing the alliance to show greater resolve in supporting Ukraine’s air‑defence against Russia.
