Romania urges citizens to protect homes from mosquitoes and stay clear of bears

As temperatures rise, Romanian authorities and experts issue practical advice to keep homes free of nuisance insects. Installing well‑fitted window and door screens, eliminating standing water in containers, and planting mosquito‑repellent species such as lavender, basil, mint or citronella are recommended. Using fans or air‑conditioning, applying approved repellents, and maintaining clean, well‑ventilated interiors further reduce mosquito activity.

In parallel, the spring season has seen increased bear activity near settlements, especially in Sibiu County, as hungry bears leave their dens. Incidents include a bear attacking a local apiary, destroying hives and stealing honey, and several encounters where residents approached a bear cub. Specialists warn that a mother bear may appear suddenly and become aggressive. The public is urged to keep a safe distance, avoid feeding or attempting to touch wild bears, and report any sightings to emergency services (112). These combined measures aim to safeguard both human health and property during the hot season.
