Romania warned of junk rating as political tussles raise early‑election questions

PSD deputy Mihai Fifor accused Ilie Bolojan and the newly naturalised Romanian Fritz of steering the country toward a “junk” sovereign‑rating, warning that such a downgrade would raise borrowing costs, shrink investment and weaken strategic autonomy. He wrote on Facebook, “Cu orice preț, absolut cu orice preț, Bolojan împinge România spre marginea prăpastiei.”

Legal analyst Toni Neacșu clarified that, despite political rhetoric, Romanian law does allow early parliamentary elections. He calculated that the earliest date such a vote could legally be held is 22 November 2026, noting “prima dată la care, din punct de vedere legal, s-ar putea desfășura alegerile anticipate ar fi 22 noiembrie 2026.” Neacșu stressed the scenario remains unlikely and is being used mainly as a political pressure tool.

Both discussions reflect ongoing concerns over Romania’s economic stability and the constitutional constraints on election timing, underscoring the interplay between fiscal credibility and parliamentary politics.
