Romania heatwave: Extreme temperatures and tropical nights forecast

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued warnings for an intensifying heatwave across much of Romania, effective from August 20. The weather event is characterized by extreme temperatures, heatwaves, and tropical nights where minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 20 and 26 degrees Celsius.

An Orange Code has been issued for several regions, including Banat, western and southern Oltenia, southern Crișana, and southwestern Transylvania, where maximum temperatures could reach between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius. Other regions, such as Moldova, Maramureș, Muntenia, and much of Transylvania, are under a Yellow Code with expected highs between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius.

The heat index (ITU) is expected to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units in many areas, significantly increasing thermal discomfort. Authorities have issued safety recommendations, including staying hydrated, avoiding intense physical activity during peak hours, and monitoring vulnerable populations like the elderly and children.
